Haiti ranked 53rd in 2017 World Press Freedom Index

Reporters Without Borders has just released its 2017 World Press Freedom Index. The index ranks 180 countries based on the level of press freedom given to their journalist.

Here are some key insights on Haiti from the annual report.

  • Haiti ranked 53rd out of 180 countries in world press freedom with a global score of 26.36. Haiti has held this position for the last 3 years (2015, 2016 & 2017).
  • Many Haitian journalist suffer from a lack of both financial resources and institutional support.
  • Among Caribbean countries, Haiti experienced relatively less press freedom than regional neighbors such as Jamaica (8th) and Trinidad & Tobago (34th).
  • Haiti did however score higher in press freedom when compared to The Dominican Republic (59th).

According to the index, the top 3 countries in the world with the highest level of press freedom are Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Reporters Without Borders is a French based international NGO who’s one of many focuses is defending the freedom of information around the world. The full 2017 World Press Freedom Index and its country by country analysis can be found here.
