How to send money to someone in Haiti

One of the best ways to send money to Haiti is through a money transfer.

You can send a money transfer to someone in Haiti by using one of several companies that specialize in this type of service.

Popular money transfer companies include CAM Transfer, Unitransfer & Western Union.

Before you can send money to family and friends in Haiti, you’ll first need to collect a few pieces of information.

What you’ll need before sending funds

The first thing you’ll need is the exact name & spelling of the person that you are sending money to.

The name listed on the money transfer request form should match the recipient’s legal name as it appears on their Haitian National ID Card or other official government-issued ID.

The recipient may be denied funds if the name on the transfer does not match what appears on their official identification.

You’ll also need the recipient’s precise home address. This should include the commune and communal section where your recipient currently resides in Haiti.

Once you’ve collected the appropriate contact information above, you can visit CAM Transfer, Unitransfer, or Western Union at one of their physical locations or online (if available).

You will need to provide your recipient’s information in the proper portion of the money transfer request form.

Confirm with your recipient about the money transfer locations in their local area.

Sending the money transfer through a company that operates locally will minimize the distance the recipient will need to travel to retrieve the funds.

Fees

The fees charged by each company will vary based on the amount of money that you’ll be sending.

There may be restrictions on the total amount you can send at one time on any given transfer.

There is typically a $1.50 surcharge on all money transfers to Haiti. You can pay this fee upfront or be charged to the recipient at the time of pickup.

Once the funds are transferred to Haiti, you should receive a receipt with the transfer details and a tracking number. You will need to provide the tracking number to your recipient.

Depending on the delivery time selected for your funds to arrive, the money should typically be available for pickup in Haiti within one or two days.

Receiving Funds in Haiti

After the funds arrive in Haiti, your recipient must visit a local branch of the money transfer institution.

Once there, your recipient must provide their government ID and tracking number.

If everything matches, they may receive the option to retrieve the funds in either U.S. Dollars or Haitian Gourdes.

Some companies may notify your recipient by phone once the funds become available for pickup.

More often than not, the receiver can visit their local branch after the specified processing time.

Please contact each financial institution directly for their specific fees and processing times.
